Middle Grade Math Playbook: Strategy Spotlight

Overview

Middle grade math is a critical milestone on the path to lifelong success. Students who build strong math skills by eighth grade are more likely to access advanced coursework, pursue college and career opportunities and increase their lifetime earnings. Communities can change this trajectory through high-quality math instruction, expanded access to advanced coursework, well-trained teachers and coordinated support across schools, families and neighborhoods.

This is a strategy spotlight published alongside StriveTogether’s Cradle-to-Career Outcomes Playbook: Middle Grade Math. The playbook synthesizes research and practical guidance communities can use to improve middle grade math.

Math proficiency in middle school is one of the strongest predictors of whether a student will graduate and go on to college or a career. yet math achievement has declined nationwide, especially for students from low-income families and communities of color. In Pima County, Arizona, the Cradle to Career Partnership is tackling this head-on through the Math Collaborative Action Network, which has reached 20 schools, supported more than 175 teachers and impacted over 16,800 students since 2021. Through job-embedded coaching, teachers reported a 21% increase in content knowledge and stronger student relationships. By strengthening teachers practice and engaging students, Pima County is building the conditions for lasting math improvement.
